A number of supporters were injured after a tifo, a large-scale choreographed display, collapsed during a practice match between FC Twente and Stevo, an amateur club, in Geesteren, Netherlands, on Saturday evening. The tifo, which showed former Twente players Epi Drost and Arnold Bruggink, fell from a crane, dropping metal pieces on top of fans below. Eight people were injured, four of whom were taken to hospital. FC Twente later confirmed on social media that ‘everyone is conscious and has received medical attention’. The match was cancelled. The first goalless draw in this European Championship was not short of scoring opportunities and it must concern Didier Deschamps that, without his talisman, the favourites were ultimately blunt. They could even have lost to a bright Netherlands team if the largely English team of officials had not, via a VAR check extending for more than two and a half minutes, disallowed a potential winner from Xavi Simons in what was a wafer-thin call. France knew there was little to be gained in risking Mbappé from the start, particularly in a format that serves up little jeopardy for the big hitters. Protective tricolore mask or not, a stray elbow to the face could bring potentially catastrophic consequences for their summer and that of the tournament’s biggest star. It seemed apt that after his Austria side ignited their hopes of reaching the last 16, Ralf Rangnick – famed for imposing a high-pressing style across the Red Bull group – plumped for an energy drink, pouring himself a glass in his post-match press conference. A well-earned victory provides hope of qualifying from Group D when they meet the Netherlands here on Tuesday. For Rangnick it was time to refuel after his side ultimately overpowered Poland, whose tournament is all but over. Marko Arnautovic, emboldened with the captain’s armband, crowned victory from the penalty spot but after Christoph Baumgartner restored Austria’s advantage, he hurtled towards Rangnick in celebration to give him a bear hug. “My glasses are still OK,” Rangnick said. “I said before the match that it would be a playoff match. The team that loses is out. The team who wins the match has everything in their own hands and that is now the case. Since I’ve been Austria coach, I think it was the most important match. Roman Yaremchuk is a big man but one blessed with a remarkable deftness of touch. Mykola Shaparenko’s ball into him after 80 minutes seemed neither one thing nor the other; too high to take in his stride, too low to head. But Yaremchuk cushioned it with an upward thrust of his leg and, in one movement, nudged it past Martin Dubravka. The shot barely had enough pace to get over the line, but it had enough, and Ukraine had a win that at half-time had seemed very unlikely. The comeback means that both Ukraine and Slovakia will qualify for the last 16 if they win their final group games next week. But bright and engaging as the game was, it was inevitably overshadowed by the political context. Even beyond Kylian Mbappé and Marcus Thuram and their explicit appeals against the Rassemblement National in France, politics has lingered just below the surface of this tournament. There were the disgraceful chants directed at Serbs by Albania and Croatia fans in Hamburg; the Kosovan journalist banned for making an eagle gesture at Serbian fans who were abusing him; English and Serbian fans booing each others’ anthems at least in part as a consequence of the Nato bombing of Belgrade; Hungarian fans with their irredentist power ballads and songs now associated with the German far right; Austrian fans booing la Marseillaise in recognition that it was originally the war song of the Army of the Rhine in the War of the First Coalition in 1792 … good luck to the Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón and his suggestion everybody just stick to football.
